ABOUT JEREMY FUNG
Jeremy Fung
Jeremy Fung (b. 1990) graduated from the Art Faculty at RMIT in 2014, and later received his Master of Fine Arts degree in the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2016.
Fung’s work is obsessed with Abstract Expressionism, which emphasizes spontaneous, automatic, or subconscious creation. His meticulous woodworking process—carving, scorching, and polishing—creates a tactile bond between artist and material. Each piece emerges as a testament to transformation, where raw elements evolve into profound expressions of emotional and physical resonance. In addition to the emotional energy and gestural surface marks characteristic of abstract expressionists like Pollock and de Kooning, Fung tries to erase individual marks in favour of large, flat areas of colour, believing that this approach represented the essential nature of visual abstraction.
Fung valued spontaneity and improvisation, and he accorded the highest importance to process. His works can be clustered around two basic inclinations: an emphasis on dynamic, energetic gesture, but also deliberately focus on more open fields of color. In either case, the imagery was primarily abstract. Even when depicting images based on visual realities, Fung favored a highly abstracted mode.
Fung is considered as one of the most favoured young rising artists by collectors. He has participated in various local and overseas exhibitions and art fairs. His selected solo exhibitions include: “Metamorphosis”, SC Gallery, Hong Kong, 2024; “Fibrillation”, SC Gallery, Hong Kong, 2023; “Never Forgets”, Gallery by the Harbour • Harbour City, Hong Kong, 2021. His selected group exhibitions include : Art Central, Hong Kong, 2025; “Memories in Abstraction”, Abu Dhabi Art Fair 2024; Lonely Fair, Seoul, 2024;“The City Never Sleeps”, Abu Dhabi Art Fair 2023; “Inhale Courage”, JPS Gallery Paris, France, 2023.
Fung was the winner of the 2014 Australia China Arts Foundation Award.
